What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring chemical compound in the hemp plant. Unlike its more well-known cannabinoid relative THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, CBD does is non-intoxicating. CBD has clinically demonstrated a number of beneficial effects on mental and physical health, from chronic pain and anxiety relief to sleep cycle regulation and reducing inflammation. CBD also has an incredibly low risk profile, with very few consumers experiencing adverse effects resulting from the use of CBD even at high levels.
How will CBD make me feel?
First and foremost, everyone reacts differently to all cannabinoids. Individuals should make their own judgments around what supplements they choose to take. Many CBD consumers report feeling relaxed, calm, focused, and happy. It's important to note that CBD does not "get you high." While it's true that CBD is a psychoactive cannabinoid (this is an oft confused point), it is non-psychotropic—CBD does not alter your thoughts, behaviors, or perceptions. Unlike its close relative THC, CBD does not induce euphoria or intoxication.
Is CBD psychoactive?
In short, yes—but not in the same way as THC. Our scientific understanding of CBD's neurochemical effects has evolved significantly in recent years. Previously, many repeated the now-debunked refrain that "CBD is not psychoactive" in order to convey that CBD does not induce intoxication like THC. Continued research has revealed that CBD is in fact psychoactive because it loosely binds to CB1 receptors in the brain to produce its beneficial effects. That said, CBD is not intoxicating like THC.
Is CBD legal?
Yes, federally. After the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp and hemp derivatives, including CBD products, are now federally legal in the United States with some restrictions. All of our products are 2018 Farm Bill compliant, guaranteed. Note that state and local laws on CBD may vary. We encourage you to stay informed of the CBD laws in your jurisdiction.
What are the risks of taking CBD?
There are currently few, if any, known adverse effects of consuming CBD even in high doses. According to a 2017 study performed by the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential… CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile… To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
Why is CBD becoming so popular?
Within the last decade, CBD began to gain national attention when it was discovered to be a new and uniquely effective treatment for a number of severe childhood epilepsy syndromes, including Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which don't respond to typical antiseizure medications. Across several studies, CBD reduced, and in some cases stopped altogether, the seizures of children afflicted with these syndromes. In June 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a highly purified pharmaceutical-grade formulation of CBD, as the first-ever federally sanctioned cannabis derivative medicine for these conditions. Over the past several years after the discovery of CBD's therapeutic value, many otherwise healthy individuals have adopted CBD as a general component of their wellness regimen due to its beneficial effects on overall mental and physical health.
What is the "entourage effect"?
There are several types of CBD products: full-spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate. For more info on the variations between these types of CBD products, see our article Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, isolate: what's the difference? The "entourage effect" refers to the synergistic impact produced by consuming full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD products, which contain all 100+ cannabinoids native to the hemp plant. Consumers of full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD products will receive the benefits of all these cannabinoids working together in the body, as opposed to consuming isolated cannabinoids like CBD alone. Consumers of CBD isolate products do not experience the "entourage effect" because isolate products contain only CBD with no other cannabinoids.
